My artwork often contrasts the urban man-made world & the fluid irrepressible power of nature. My early landscape paintings were inspired by five summers as Artist-in-Residence at an Elizabethan country house & later by visiting heavy engineering works. Using oils/mixed media, I have tried to capture both the raw brutality of industry with its powerful geometry & eroded textures – as well as the poetic natural beauty of gardens & the wilds alike. I love the distorting effects of borrowed light & reflections on water, seeking to capture the moment when luminosity & shadow lie in perfect harmony. Most recently I have been fascinated with creating composite images from abstract textures, photography, sketches & paint – & from these I have enjoyed painting gradually more expressive, semi-abstract landscapes. Living & painting in both Crouch End & rural East Yorkshire, my work has been widely shown in both.
