My artwork explores the happy contrast between man-made geometric structures and the fluid, irrepressible power of nature. My early landscape paintings were inspired by several summers as Artist-in-Residence at a country house in Yorkshire and later by visiting heavy engineering works. Using oils/mixed media, I have tried to capture both the raw brutality of industry with its powerful structures and eroded textures – as well as the poetic natural beauty of gardens and the wilds alike. I like the distorting effects of borrowed light and reflections on water, seeking to capture the moment when luminosity and shadow lie in perfect harmony. Most recently I have been fascinated with creating composite images from abstract textures, photography, sketches and paint. Working and private art tutoring from home in Crouch End, my work has been shown in Yorkshire and London.
