Nicky O'Donnell

I am a recent BA Ceramics graduate from Central Saint Martins, developing a diverse practice experimenting with clay, print and moving images. I investigate materials and processes allowing me to take risks and expand boundaries. I use clay as a tool for communication, inviting the viewer to look closely and appreciate detail. The urban and nature often collide in my work which is informed by clay’s history and my concern for the environment. My recent work expresses the phenomena of Plant Blindness, which was highlighted by botanists in 1999 who demonstrated that humans don’t acknowledge plants in the environment in the same way we recognise animals – problematic as globally 2/5ths of plant species are endangered.I use grass as a metaphor for Plant Blindness as it is often ignored, flooded with weed killer, or ripped up and replaced by imitations – its importance and beauty unacknowledged. I’m taking what is beneath our feet and placing it in the forefront.
