Rachel Mercer

People and places are recurring themes in my paintings. My exploration is currently across two bodies of work: one in a children’s playground, and the other within a bustling shopping centre. Both settings are vibrant with everyday life, microcosms in which I observe human behaviour. Central to my approach is a profound fascination with human interaction and connection to the observed world.

My practise is centred around the dynamic movement and actions of the human body as it moves through space, emphasising its fluidity and its haptic beauty. I want each figure to manifest a palpable presence, inviting viewers into an intimate connection. While observational drawing is at the work’s foundation, the final composition arises from memory and feeling, allowing the figures to shift, dissolve and become part of the space. I want the figures to emerge from within the sensuality of the medium and the space to be like folds of fabric, rhythmic and malleable and like patchwork the space.
