My work is inspired by and reflects the physical world about me, the land and especially the sea. I spend a lot of time studying and painting the wild North Cornwall coastline, which, with the rolling hills and valleys of its interior has become really very important to me. Maybe it’s because I prefer the simple and stark – the empty landscape, the open sea and I can then create my own energy with colour and the way I use the paint on the canvas. Recently, ripples have been my focus. Even my landscapes have ripples but it is the way the sea meets the shore that I find mesmerising.
I usually work in oils because they can provide the depth of colour as well as an amazing transparency. I create layers of paint with brush and palette knife to help my paintings express what lies beneath.
