I am a figurative painter, fascinated by unexplored identities and unlived lives and inspired by imagery that surrounds us, the search for joy and the disregard of convention. Working from my garden studio, I employ different painterly languages – oil paint, pattern transfer, epoxy resin – and create multiple layers to develop an intimate relationship between content and surface. Pattern from period wallpaper often offers a background, interacting and responding to the paint. This introduces a decorative, domestic dimension and suggests fragments of a past narrative that holds the figures, primarily women, in time.
My recent work has been selected for the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize, ING Discerning Eye, the Beep International Painting Prize and Emerging Women Artists.
