While my portraits are quite formally posed, I have latterly become interested in the less visible character of the person I am painting; the quiet reflection of the extrovert or the vulnerability of the self-assured, for example. I use only a single flat colour backgrounds to draw focus upon the figure. These colour backgrounds are often inspired by historic colours. I paint in oils, building and taking away layers using wet and dry sandpaper and finally building the image back up through glazing. My paintings are a mixture of commissions and personal projects.
